A conversion is not just a number with a different label. It is a relationship between two units that represent the same quantity. The dependable method is to move through a shared base unit, retain precision while calculating, and round only at the end.
How this calculator works
Length, mass, volume, area, speed, time, and data-storage values are converted through a defined base unit. Temperature is different: Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin use formulas rather than a single multiplication factor. The calculator handles both paths so the requested value and unit stay visible.
For data storage, this tool uses decimal prefixes: 1 KB is 1,000 bytes and 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. Binary quantities are normally written KiB, MiB, and GiB; they are deliberately not silently mixed in with the decimal choices.
Use the result responsibly
For general planning, recipes, travel, repairs, and comparisons, a clear rounded result is often enough. Engineering, health, laboratory, legal-metrology, and contractual work may require a specific standard, significant figures, uncertainty treatment, or an exact conversion factor. In those cases, the governing document wins.
NIST’s guidance describes unit conversion as a factor-based process and recommends identifying the starting and desired units, using an appropriate factor, checking the result, and rounding only after the calculation. That is the practical discipline behind this small tool.
